She Done Him Wrong (1933)

SheDoneHimWrongPosterI’d never seen a Mae West film until I watched Sextette. Depending on who you ask, that’s either the worst way to start, or the only way to start. Being a relatively new inductee to the Mae West fan club, I’ve gotta say, I haven’t decided yet.

West’s film career didn’t start until she was just about 40, and She Done Him Wrong is only her second film appearance. Much like Sextette and, I imagine, the rest of her films (I will find this out soon enough), West plays a much-coveted woman. Here it’s Lady Lou, a gorgeous singer in a club who every man wants. Her current boyfriend is running a white-slavery ring. Her ex-boyfriend is stuck in jail. And a third guy wants to put the first guy in jail so he can steal Lou away. Lou really only cares about the guy who runs the mission next door (Cary Grant) and, of course, diamonds.

Well, I don’t have much to say for the plot. Who cares? I’m watching for Mae’s tight-dresses, amazing hats, and snappy one-liners. Is this movie great? No, of course not. Whatever, it’s Mae West.
