Wet Hot American Summer (2001)

Me: “So, this is like a smarter, funnier Dazed and Confused, right?”

Q: “Yes.”

Gene shows Coop some hot moves.

So, that pretty much sums it up. David Wain and some of your other favorite staples from The State bring you a parody of every cutesy summer camp movie you’ve ever seen. Janeane Garofalo plays Beth, the hippie camp director. She has a crush on Henry (David Hyde Pierce), a nerdy astronomy professor. Michael Showalter is Coop, the dorky hero who is in love with the hottie, Katie, who is dating Andy (Paul Rudd) the classic jerky beefcake. If I had to pick a favorite character, it would be Gene, the Vietnam vet who has a sexual attraction to inanimate kitchen objects (played by Christopher Meloni, a.k.a. Law and Order‘s Elliot Stabler – finally, proof the guy has a sense of humor).

The first time I watched this alone and thought it was lame. The second time I had half a bottle of wine in me, watched it with someone, and enjoyed it quite a lot. Let that be a lesson to you – watch this with someone and alcohol. If you liked The State you’ll dig this, too.
