The Company of Wolves (1984)

Third in our supernatural-coming-of-age marathon is The Company of Wolves. This one involves another set of scary teeth, but not vampires this time. Instead, it’s back to the theme of Howling III – werewolves!

The better to lick you with, my dear…

Simply put, this movie is a retelling of the classic fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, but instead of just a plain-old Big Bad Wolf, it’s werewolves.

The heroine, Rosaleen, has just attended her sister’s funeral, who has died at the hands of wolves in the woods. As a result, Granny (played by Angela Landsbury – bonus!) is getting a little overprotective. Rosaleen’s been spending a lot of time with grandma since her sister’s passing, which of course means lots of trips through the woods. Granny regales her with tales of werewolves, of course, and always warns her to “stay on the path.” But what fun is that?

The werewolf special effects are fantastic here, perhaps worth a watch just for that – but the whole movie is good. I loved the world in which this movie take place. Despite the prowling wolves, I’d like to frolic in these woods. I want my granny to make me that red shawl that’s as soft as kittens! This marks three good ones in a row. A great way to end a triple feature! Thanks, Q.

I want to see this. A bit sad that it isn’t just In the Company of Men but with wolves. which would be a super fucking weird movie.
