Howling III: The Marsupials (1987)

This is another of the few flicks I brought for summer viewing. I had seen it once before and I remember loving it. Though I suppose that’s not really a surprise; goofy Australian horror is always a great combination in my opinion.

A young girl (Jerboa Jerboa) from Flow, Australia (which, in a very Nilbog moment, we realize is “wolf”

Werenun!

backwards!) runs away from home. She’s found sleeping in a Sydney park by a guy (Donny) who thinks she’ll be perfect for the lead role in the movie he’s making (which happens to be directed by someone who looks and sounds an awful like Q’s favorite, Ken Russell! No joke!). It isn’t long before Jerboa lets out with the big news – she’s a werewolf. This doesn’t stop Donny from falling in love with her (it’s a short movie). Jerboa can smell that some werenuns from Flow are in town looking for her.

Jerboa is hit by a car as she’s running away from the werenuns, and the hospital staff are stunned to find that her organ functions and metabolism are totally different from ours. They call in the resident werewolf guy and determine that she’s pregnant. Which is really good news for us, because it leads to my very favorite scene in the movie, where Jerboa gives birth to a tiny little baby that soon climbs into her pouch, because yes ladies and gentlemen: we are in Australia and yes: that must mean even the werewolves are marsupials!

Best scene ever – werewolf-marsupial birth!

Anyway, a bunch of other crap happens (including a Russian wereballerina coming to town) and there are lots of great opportunities for good puppetry and special effects (no CGI – always a refreshing thing to see).

Is this movie a five-star knockout? No, but it does have Russian wereballerinas, marsupial werewolves, and pretty Australian girls who say “Donny” with an Australian accent throughout the whole movie. Goofy and light, this is a good flick to sit down and waste time with.
